Trump’s Legal Troubles Reignite Support from Followers
“The strangest thing is that Trump’s legal problems reignite the support of his followers, (…) kind of incorporating the narrative that the powerful are uniting against Donald Trump and using the Department of Justice to suppress rights, for lack of a better word,” says Richard Groper, a political scientist specializing in American Governance.
Experts, like Professor Groper, say that despite Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution providing that a citizen who participated in acts of insurrection should be disqualified from holding public office, the worst thing for the country’s democracy would be a favorable decision to block Trump. The legal prerogative, which Maine and Colorado appealed to, is a vestige of the Civil War designed to prevent Confederates from holding public office.
“Certainly, he did something illegal. In my opinion, there were many illegal activities, but in the end it is better to let people decide for the sake of democracy. We don’t want judges making political decisions in this country,” evaluates Groper.
However, voters do not seem very willing to rein in Donald Trump, who appears to be the top preference for voters in 5 of the 6 swing states, which vary their party preference, according to a survey by 270 to Win.
