Projeto de Lei defende inclusão de Dom Hélder no Livro dos Heróis da Pátria
O senador Fernando Dueire (MDB-PE) defendeu seu Projeto de Lei 3.716/2023, que pede a inclusão do nome de Dom Hélder, idealizador da Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil (CNBB), no Livro dos Heróis e Heroínas da Pátria. Aprovado terminativamente pela Comissão de Educação e Cultura do Senado (CE), a proposta segiu para avaliação da Câmara.
Em pronunciamento no Plenário, nesta quarta-feira (20), o parlamentar ressaltou que o religioso, ex-arcebispo de Recife e Olinda, foi “incansável defensor dos direitos humanos e da justiça social” durante os anos da ditadura militar.
— Dom Hélder Pessoa Câmara, conhecido como o ‘Dom da Paz’, preenche com sobras e louvor todos esses requisitos […] esteve sempre atento às necessidades de seu tempo e na busca de condições melhores de vida e de oportunidades. A partir disso, aflorou em si um pensamento clássico, inovador, sempre atual, traduzido em importantes ações, como no ano de 1956, na então capital brasileira, Rio de Janeiro, quando fundou a Cruzada São Sebastião, da qual surgiu a primeira iniciativa de habitação popular no país, com a missão de viabilizar condições decentes de moradia — relembrou.
O senador destacou a trajetória do arcebispo, indicado quatro vezes ao Prêmio Nobel da Paz, que defendia uma igreja voltada para os pobres. Segundo o parlamentar, a atuação dele impactou positivamente a sociedade brasileira e inspirou causas humanitárias. Dueire lembrou o reconhecimento da obra de Dom Hélder, tanto no Brasil quanto no exterior.
— Foram cerca de 30 títulos de cidadão honorário, entre eles o de Pernambuco, de Recife, de Belo Horizonte. Mais de 30 títulos de doutor honoris causa, pela Universidade de Saint Louis, nos Estados Unidos; de Harvard; pela Universidade de Paris; pela Universidade de Florença, na Itália; pelas Universidades Católicas de Pernambuco, de São Paulo, de Santos, do Paraná; da Universidade Federal do Ceará e muitas outras. Foi por quatro vezes indicado para o Prêmio Nobel da Paz — destacou.

Sentator Defends Inclusion of Dom Hélder in the “Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Nation”
The senator Fernando Dueire (MDB-PE) defended his Bill 3.716/2023, which calls for the inclusion of Dom Hélder’s name, founder of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), in the Book of Heroes and Heroines of the Nation. Approved conclusively by the Senate’s Committee on Education and Culture (CE), the proposal will now be evaluated by the Chamber of Deputies.
In a speech in the Plenary on this Wednesday (20), the senator emphasized that the religious leader, former archbishop of Recife and Olinda, was an “incessant defender of human rights and social justice” during the years of military dictatorship.
“Dom Hélder Pessoa Câmara, known as the ‘Dom of Peace’, fulfills with excess and praise all these requirements[…] he was always attentive to the needs of his time and in search of better living conditions and opportunities. From that, a classical, innovative, always current thought emerged in him, translated into important actions, such as in 1956, in the then Brazilian capital, Rio de Janeiro, when he founded the Saint Sebastian Crusade, from which the first popular housing initiative in the country emerged, with the mission of making decent housing conditions possible,” he recalled.
The senator highlighted the trajectory of the archbishop, nominated four times for the Nobel Peace Prize, who advocated for a church focused on the poor. According to the senator, his actions had a positive impact on Brazilian society and inspired humanitarian causes. Dueire mentioned the recognition of Dom Hélder’s work, both in Brazil and abroad.
“He received around 30 honorary citizenship titles, including those of Pernambuco, Recife, Belo Horizonte. Over 30 honorary doctorate titles, from Saint Louis University in the United States; from Harvard; from the University of Paris; from the University of Florence in Italy; from the Catholic Universities of Pernambuco, São Paulo, Santos, and Paraná; from the Federal University of Ceará, among many others. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize four times,” he highlighted.
