Latino support for Trump increases in key states
Despite still leading, Kamala Harris knows that in states where the election is practically tied, an increase in support for Trump could be decisive. In Arizona, for example, a fifth of the electorate is made up of Latinos. The rate is 20% in Nevada.
The situation in Florida is even more revealing. A survey by Marist College found that Trump would have 58% of the Latino vote in the state, compared to just 40% for Harris.
The numbers reveal a stark contrast with the results of recent years. In 2020, Joe Biden garnered 53% of the Hispanic vote in Florida. In 2016, Hillary Clinton received 62% of the vote from this population in the state.
‘Maracas for Trump’
Among analysts and social scientists, many wonder why this population has shifted to support the Republican Party, which even has a group called “Maracas for Trump,” in reference to Latino instruments.
One of the arguments for the increase in support would be the cost of living. In the survey, 35% of Latinos indicated that Trump’s policies helped their communities, compared to just 22% support for Biden’s economic plans. 34% of respondents said Trump’s policies had harmed their living conditions, compared to a rate of 30% when the question refers to policies under the Trump administration.
