Evolution of Folha Newspaper: A Journey Through 103 Years of Innovation

By adopting the Berliner format, with more content and easier to handle, Folha once again innovates in a trajectory of 103 years marked by frequent editorial and technological advances.

The First Edition – 1921

Created by Olívio Olavo de Olival Costa and Pedro Cunha in São Paulo with around 580,000 inhabitants, Folha da Noite premiered on February 19, 1921. In its debut edition, it published the first photo, something unusual for the time.

Folha da Manhã – 1925

Another newspaper from the group is born, Folha da Manhã. In that same year, a character appears in its pages that becomes popular by expressing the aspirations of the São Paulo middle class. It’s Juca Pato, a creation of cartoonist and caricaturist Belmonte.

Comics – 1935

On September 7, Folha da Noite publishes comic strips for the first time. The pioneering character is the sailor Popeye, who becomes exclusive to the newspaper in Brazil.

Offset Printing – 1968

The newspaper publishes for the first time an entire edition in offset, a technology that allowed for more images to be printed with greater clarity than its competitors.

With a history full of groundbreaking moments and a commitment to quality journalism, Folha remains at the forefront of the media landscape, shaping the future of news delivery and storytelling.
